Story: Mothers Country

I come from a strong line of Aboriginal women. Descendant of old Granny Mibu, Neli Nidgeri, born at Pulan (Amity). My mother Sandra Rose Delaney nee Close who is a current artist and author. There’s also my maternal grandmother Marion Violet Close nee Currie who married into the close family. My Nan is 95 years old and still going strong. She’s originally from Jerico/Bunya Mountains but an Elder of our community Minjerribah.

This painting is our many family groups on country past and present that keep growing. The circles bounded together, for stronger relationships. Colours chosen to represent our women, with touches of blue to reflect Quandamooka Waters. Babragowi ‘pigface flowers’, a native plant found along the coastal areas of Minjerribah reminded me of the women in my life. My mother told me our Grannies gathered wildflowers for special occasions, for decorations in their homes and for the graves.

Colourful Creativity

I purchased this for my golf games and it certainly drew comment for its non-boring bright design! Its energetic colours are really “happy making!” My order arrived efficiently and was carefully packed. Sizing seems a little on the larger allowance. Would certainly use Yarn Marketplace again.

I have been wearing these shirts for many many years - children too when they were know as Bundarra. They are super comfy, light weight but good quality. I have thrown them in the dryer, worn them in chlorine & gardened in them. They are excellent for swimming, fishing, camping & sweating. I still have ones in size 4 kids that has survived 4 years through 2 young full on boys! I wear a size 16-18 & decided to buy the size 20 as I don’t like things tight & they are a ‘fitted’ style. I am glad I did. Perfect size & room to move in them. Colours are so vibrant & better in real life. Always find them cheaper then other brands too. We have 12 of these shirts in our family of diff Designs & I highly Recommend! Especially for our far north queensland humid weather.

Shara Delaney

Aboriginal Quandamooka woman

Shara is an Australian Aboriginal contemporary artist from Quandamooka country, inspired by stories of her Elders, the generation from One Mile. “I want to remember them [my elders] by painting, so I can leave something for my daughter one day.” Shara’s paintings are her identity as a strong saltwater woman, her connection to family, sand and sea.
