NAIDOC 2021: 'Heal Country, Heal our Nation'

As many of you may have already seen, the 2021 NAIDOC theme has been announced! The theme ‘Heal Country, Heal our Nation’ is a call to action which Australia has needed for some time now. Country is an inherent part of First Nation peoples identities; it forms a fundamental part of every aspect of life - spiritually, physically, emotionally and culturally. It is this incredibly strong connection that we need to celebrate and use as a driving force to protect the land, water and cultural heritage of beautiful Australia.

For Indigenous people, country is more than just a place, it is often spoken of as a person. Increasingly, Australia’s precious environment is at risk. The destruction of our beautiful environment, sacred and ancient sites (some of the oldest human occupation sites on the planet) is a huge loss for our nation, and the world. Through the knowledge and wisdom of First Nations people our country can be protected and managed in a sustainable way.

“Healing Country means embracing First Nation’s cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage. That the culture and values of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders are respected equally to and the cultures and values of all Australians. The right to protect Country and culture is fundamental.” - Celebrating NAIDOC Week, 2021.

This year's theme is about bringing everyone together as a nation through protecting country and culture. It’s about bringing lasting change in historical, political and administrative areas to empower and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities’ culture and heritage. At Yarn, we celebrate country and culture through collaborations with our partner artists; whose works speak of strong and unique connections to country. We are very excited to start putting together our 2021 NAIDOC collection. Stay tuned for some gorgeous designs and special stories.
