Y2K Streetwear Inspo: NAIDOC Edition

The nostalgia for Y2K (turn-of-the-millennium) trends have definitely been in the works for a while, thanks to Gen Z discovering and showcasing them on Tik Tok. So, today we’re bringing you iconic streetwear looks from early naughts for inspiration to style our NAIDOC 2021 range. Get styling and stand out this NAIDOC Week!
When you think of the Y2K fashion aesthetic, there are probably a few things that come to mind: denim on denim, mini handbags, ‘retro’ tees, boho-western details, and platform sneakers. These throwback pieces are getting a second chance, and an entirely new generation of fashionistas. We’ve styled a look that says boho-western meets urban chic. So, we give you our retro inspired NAIDOC Heart Womens Rose Tee paired with a white denim trucker jacket. The ‘fresh’ appeal of the jacket makes the white NAIDOC logo pop, and the tan top-stitching details provide a contrasting ‘western’ look. For the rest of the look, we’ve paired some light-wash, cut-off mum jeans with a Y2K-essential chunky tan ‘cowgirl’ belt and mini tan leather Sampson Embroidered Handbag - the bag’s embroidered flower shapes were literally on everything Y2K fashion. Lastly, we can’t forget the chunky white platform sneakers to top off the look with an urban feel.
From a decade ruled by Britney Spears, there are so many of her looks that are back in action in 2021! Britney Spears’ Y2K looks were often a big nod to her western roots, so inevitably 2000’s fashion began to take cues from 1960s boho-western looks. No matter what style of jeans, from low risers to bootcut to cargo, as long as you had a pair that had some kind of embellishment, like rhinestones or zipper details, you were considered a ‘cool kid.’ That’s why we’ve paired these outrageous zipper-detailed jeans with a chunky ‘cowgirl’ buckle belt. It’s not a western look without a classic white tee and cowboy boots, so we’ve french-tucked into the jeans our ‘retro’ inspired NAIDOC Heal Country Womens Organic Natural Tee and some tan RM Williams pull-on boots. To top off the look, we've chosen to style the hair out natural with our Karnta Jukurrpa Knot Top Headband (part of our Turquoise & Red - Warlu Hair Set) - an essential Y2K accessory.
If it’s one thing Y2K urban fashion has taught us, it’s how to dress with confidence and attitude. To get this leisurewear trend - that got a cultural cosign from major artists and celebrities like NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, LL Cool J and Aaliyah - we’ve paired some loose cut-off overalls with our NAIDOC Heart Womens Black Tee, our vibrant Karnta Jukurrpa Bucket Hat and some fresh white Nike sneakers and Adidas crew socks. Not only were bucket hats one of the most functional 2000’s trends, amongst an array of impractical trends, they instantly added a 'relaxed-cool' look to any ready-to-wear outfit. So, whether you’re going to a gig, to the skatepark, to the beach, on a road trip or just on-the-go, this ‘chill,’ utilitarian outfit will have you covered!
