Spinifex rustling in a gentle breeze, carpets of flowers blooming in spring, sun glistening across rich soil. Desert Landscapes features artworks that celebrate the landscapes, animals, plants and waterways rooted in the rich heritage of artist Jessica Begg’s ancestral Yued Noongar land. This new range of blouses, dresses, fashion and polos is a vibrant, contemporary collection honouring family, connection, and the beauty of Country.
Jessica Begg is a proud Yued Noongar descendant living with her family in her hometown of Moora, Western Australia.
She felt inspired to create art as a way of feeling connected to her culture, which has been mostly lost due to her great grandfather being part of the stolen generation. She draws inspiration from her family, the native flora and rough spinifex of the Yued region, the heat in the summer, the Moore River and the meeting places in between.
She uses an unrestricted palette and traditional shapes and symbols to create a contemporary interpretation of her culture.
I have spent years studying traditional Indigenous art forms and techniques, while also experimenting with new mediums and styles to create pieces that are both rooted in tradition and relevant to the contemporary art world.
My journey has been a process of exploration and discovery, as I continue to learn and grow as an artist while honouring the legacy of my ancestors.”
